How do I get Started as a Maker of Jewelry?

DSC_0093There are two ways.

The first way to become a jewelry-maker is to attend the Gemological Institute of America. This nonprofit institute headquartered in Carlsbad, California offers courses both online and at its’ 12 locations around the world. They are dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology, and their International Diamond Grading System has become the standard for rating and comparing diamonds around the world. Find out more about their resources and classes here.

Of course, there are less conventional ways to fall into this profession. Our amazing jeweler, Garo, is an outstanding example.

As a young boy living in Jordan, Garo needed a way to support his family. So, at the age of 10 his uncle made him an apprentice and taught him everything related to jewelry. From designing a new piece, to creating a wax, to setting precious gems and everything in between, Garo quickly honed his craft! Now, 67 years of jewelry-making later, Garo is one of the best in the business. He loves creating a piece of art that makes everyone admire and want to own it.

So, no matter which path you take, the key to creating pieces that everyone admires and desires is experience. And the road to crafting beautiful jewelry is certainly a rewarding one!
